The SCCG competed against the FCCC in their 9th game of the ACA T20 Division 2 tournament in 2023. The match took place at the Cricket Club Velden 91 cricket ground in Latschach, Austria on July 30, 2023. The cricket match commenced with the FCCC winning the toss and electing to bat first, capitalizing on the favorable batting conditions at Velden. Although the SCCG made an impressive start to their bowling attack, securing an early breakthrough in the very first over, the opening batsmen Tarun and number 3 batsman Ishpal exhibited exceptional form, accumulating 40 and 86 runs respectively at strike rates exceeding 120. Sandhu also made a significant contribution, scoring a brisk 25 runs off just 11 deliveries, including an impressive 22 runs off a single over bowled by Karthik of SCCG. Additionally, tempers flared as some SCCG players expressed discontent with certain umpiring decisions, leading to a heated discussion with the umpire. Consequently, the umpire deemed it necessary to penalize SCCG by awarding 5 runs to FCCC, thereby augmenting their overall total. It is worth noting that penalty runs are typically assigned only in instances of player misconduct or consistent delays in overrate, accompanied by prior warnings from the umpire. In this instance, however, the umpire believed that the discussion between SCCG players and the umpire warranted the imposition of penalty runs. It is regrettable that the SCCG players failed to exercise caution and reserve such discussions for the designated innings break, consequently incurring the penalty after the damage had already been done. Coupled with these contributions and a number of dropped catches and misfields by SCCG, FCCC managed to attain a commendable total of 185/6 within the allotted 20 overs.

In pursuit of a challenging target of 186 runs within the allotted 20 overs, the batsmen of SCCG, Vikram and Jimmy, began their innings with an optimistic outlook. However, the strategic bowling variations introduced by the FCCC captain effectively restricted the run rate and exerted pressure on the batsmen. Despite the mounting challenge, Vikram and Jimmy displayed commendable resilience to accumulate 18 and 24 runs respectively. Moreover, Ghani, batting at number 7, showcased a standout performance by contributing the highest individual score of 25 runs for SCCG. A little while before, a surprising turn of events occurred when Amit, a consistent run-getter for SCCG, was dismissed in an unorthodox manner. Blocking an inside-edged ball with his wrist, Amit’s dismissal prompted a lengthy consultation between the umpires and the competition manager before he was ultimately ruled out. It is customary for the benefit of doubt to favor the batsman in such instances, but Amit’s dismissal deprived him of what could have been an exceptional innings. Subsequent wickets fell swiftly as the rest of the batsmen succumbed to simple deliveries, resulting in edges or simple catches within the inner circle. Ultimately, SCCG could only muster a total of 110 runs in 18.4 overs, with all wickets claimed by the opposition. The significant margin of defeat in one of the first SCCG’s loss in this manner this year leaves much room for reflection and improvement.
