SCCG®: Play Green, Play for our Future
The world is, though might not seem like it now, heading towards a disastrous future. Small changes, like strange weather phenomena, decreased availability of resources, etc., results of environmental destruction have already been observed. These changes are recognized as indicators of the long term environmental destruction leading to our impending doom by the scientific community already – our Environment severely needs our help NOW !
Specific goals have been defined for the betterment of our environmental future by the united nations through the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development (see below)
Steps, even small ones, taken towrds the protection of our environment are very much needed. Our own survivability and future is closely linked to the environment.
*#PLAYGREEN* is one such small initiative, with 8 activities taken up by the SCCG, and here are some small steps the team will try to take this season to become more environmentally friendly:
The SCCG pledges to try its level best to
1. Reduce water consumption: The club will encourage reduced water consumption by ensuring that they only water the pitch and surrounding areas when needed.
2. Use renewable energy sources: The club will encourage installation of solar panels to generate electricity. This will not only reduce the carbon footprint of the ground but also lower electricity bills.
3. Encourage Carpooling & Carsharing: The club will adopt and encourage carpooling among players, coaches, and supporters. The club will also encourage local players to adopt cycling or use local transport to arrive at the ground.
4. Reduce & Separate waste: The club will try to reduce waste by bringing recycling bins and separating our garbage into bio, metal, plastic and restmull. We will also use and encourage the use of reusable cups and plates for events and matches.
5. Plant trees: The club will try (when allowed) to plant trees around the home ground and clubhouse to create a more pleasant environment, reduce carbon emissions, and provide shade.
6. Go paperless and no plastics: The club will try to use as less paper as possible, by using digital platforms or recycled paper for planning, event registrations, scoring, and sponsor coupons. Also, the club will reduce its usage of single-use plastics as much as its possible.
7. Reuse and refurbish equipment: The club will set up a second-hand market called ‘#PLAYGREEN Market‘, where players and clubs all over Austria and Slovenia can resell their used equipment, contributing to reducing the wastage from cricketing community. The information on sustainable behaviour and listed items will also be displayed on a Glide app which will be published soon.

8. Spread awareness: The club will try its best to educate players, supporters, and the community about the importance of sustainability and the steps they can take to reduce their environmental impact. A google form based quiz ‘PLAY GREEN’ will be shared with players of other clubs, which rates each participant’s sustainability and provides feedback for improvements.
By taking these simple steps, the SCCG will make an effort to make a small but significant contribution to protect the environment starting this cricketing season, and encourages the others to follow.
